Laurie Gutmann

Dr. Gutmann has been involved in the NeuroNEXT site management and site support group for the CCC since the beginning of NeuroNEXT. She also was a NeuroNEXT PI for the University of Iowa before becoming Chair of Neurology at Indiana University in 2020.  She received a BA from Oberlin College, her MD from West Virginia University School of Medicine, and did her Neurology Residency and Neuromuscular/EMG Fellowship at University of Virginia. She was a faculty member of the West Virginia University School of Medicine for 20 years and is currently Professor of Neurology at the University of Iowa. She has board certification in neurology, clinical neurophysiology, vascular neurology, and neuromuscular medicine. Dr. Gutmann had long-standing clinical trials experience beginning at WVU, enhanced by her four years of experience in the extramural clinical trials program at NINDS/NIH. She served there as program officer for several U01 trials, was a consultant for Coriell Repository, and was actively involved in the Office of Clinical Research activities. She was the Medical Director of the WVU Stroke Center, clinical neurophysiology fellowship and residency program director, and director of the MDA/ALS clinic. She was a member of the University of Iowa neuromuscular research division and director of the Myotonic Dystrophy Clinic from 2013-2020. She is coPI of the NINDS Clinical Trials Methodology Course. She is on the AAN Education Committee, was chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee, and served as a director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is currently chair of neurology and co-director of the Neuroscience Institute at Indiana University.
