Dr. Lumy Sawaki-Adams is a Program Director in the Division of Clinical Research at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). She currently serves as the Co-Director of NeuroNEXT and Medical Officer for the NINDS Safety and Risk Assessment Committee. Prior to joining NINDS, she was a Program Director in the Division for Research Capacity Building at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences spearheading large programs to strengthen clinical research infrastructure in IDeA states. She spent over 25 years in academia as a clinician scientist and came to NIH from the University of Kentucky where she was an Associate Professor and the Cardinal Hill Endowed Chair in Neurorehabilitation Research. She has extensive expertise in clinical research, clinical trials, neurorehabilitation and neuromodulation to improve function and quality of life in people with severe neurologic impairments including stroke, spinal cord injury, chronic pain and cerebral palsy. She also has an extensive track record of mentoring students, postdoctoral fellows, medical residents, and clinicians. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and her Ph.D. in clinical neurophysiology. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at NINDS.
